Madison Man Sentenced for Bank Robbery

Madison, Wisconsin—Erik C. Peterson, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Michael Caldwell, 25, of Madison, Wisconsin, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb to 70 months in prison for bank robbery. Caldwell pleaded guilty to this charge on October 2, 2008.

On July 31, 2008, Caldwell entered the Badger Campus Credit Union carrying a bag. He told the tellers that he had a bomb and that he wanted their money. The tellers gave him money and he left the bank with approximately $14,000. As Caldwell was leaving the bank, a regular customer of the bank entered and learned that the bank had been robbed and that he had just held the door open for the robber. The customer got on his bike and followed Caldwell, who was on foot, until the police arrived and arrested him.

At sentencing, Caldwell told the judge that he robbed the bank to get money for drugs.

The charge against Caldwell was the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department, the UW-Madison Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
