Former Director of Overture Center Pleads Guilty to Mail
Fraud and Tax Evasion
Madison, Wisconsin—Erik C. Peterson,
United States Attorney for the Western District of
Wisconsin, announced that Robert D'Angelo, 63, of Madison,
pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Madison.
D'Angelo pleaded to one count of mail fraud which alleged
that he had devised and participated in a scheme to
defraud the City of Madison of his honest services.
D'Angelo also pleaded guilty to filing a materially
false 2004 federal income tax return with the Internal
Revenue Service.
On October 10, 2007, a federal grand
jury sitting in Madison returned an indictment against
D'Angelo. The indictment charged D'Angelo with mail
fraud, wire fraud, filing false federal income tax
returns, and money laundering. The mail and wire fraud
counts alleged that D'Angelo defrauded the City of
Madison by operating two side businesses from his City
office, using City resources including his office computer,
office employees, office supplies and equipment, and
office storage facilities. The indictment also alleged
that D'Angelo filed false income tax returns for the
years 2001 through 2004.

Crabb scheduled sentencing for April 22, 2008, at 1:00
p.m. As to the mail fraud charge, D'Angelo faces a
statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and
a $250,000 fine. On the false tax return count, D'Angelo
faces a statutory maximum penalty of three years in
prison and a $250,000 fine.
The charges against D'Angelo were the
result of a joint investigation conducted by the Madison
Police Department, the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal
Investigation Division, the U.S. Postal Inspection
Service, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The
prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant
United States Attorney Daniel J. Graber.
