Federal Grand Jury Returns Indictments

Madison, Wisconsin—A federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin, sitting in Madison, returned the following indictments today. You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Man Charged with Aiding Bank Robbery

Michael L. Simmons, 28, is charged with aiding and abetting the robbery of the US Bank, in the Town of Blooming Grove, Wis., on May 21, 2008. The indictment alleges that in committing this offense, Simmons put other persons in jeopardy by the use of dangerous weapons.

If convicted, Simmons faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Madison Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.

Madison Man Charged with Possession of Child Pornography

John K. Stephens, 51, of Madison, Wis., is charged with possessing two computer hard drives which contained visual depictions involving the use of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. The indictment alleges that he possessed the computer hard drives on November 14, 2007. The indictment also seeks the forfeiture of all visual depictions which contain images of child pornography, together with the storage media in which they are contained, and property used in the alleged possession of child pornography offense, including a computer and hard drive.

If convicted, Stephens faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Madison Police Department. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Przybylinski Finn.

Janesville Man Charged with Drug Crime

Jose Luis Quintero, 27, of Janesville, Wis., is charged with conspiring with Fidel Holguin and others to possess and distribute cocaine from May 2007 to April 2008. The indictment also seeks the forfeiture of a vehicle from Quintero.

If convicted, Quintero faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Rock County Safe Streets Task Force. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Reinhard.

Beloit Man Charged with Drug Crime

Juan Reyes, 22, of Beloit, Wis., is charged with conspiring with Fidel Holguin and others to possess and distribute cocaine from January 2007 to May 2008. The indictment alleges that the conspiracy involved more than 500 grams of cocaine.

If convicted, Reyes faces a mandatory minimum penalty of five years and a maximum of 40 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Rock County Safe Streets Task Force. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Reinhard.

Wisconsin Rapids Woman Charged with Escape

Julia Applebee, 21, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., is charged with escaping from the Fahrman Center Community Correctional Program in Eau Claire, Wis., on April 20, 2008. If convicted, Applebee faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. The charge against her is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Marshals Service. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.

Inmate Charged with Possessing Weapon

Carlan Hodges, 40, an inmate of the Federal Correctional Institution at Oxford, Wis., is charged with possessing, on April 25, 2008, an object designed to be used as a weapon. If convicted, Hodges faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita. M. Rumbelow.
