Prison Inmate Sentenced for Marijuana Possession

Madison, Wisconsin -- Erik C. Peterson, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Mateo Morales, 37, currently an inmate of the Federal Correctional Institution at Oxford, Wis., was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to six months in prison for possession of marijuana by a prison inmate. This term of imprisonment will be served following the 30-year sentence he is currently serving. Morales pleaded guilty to this charge June 13, 2008.

On September 2, 2007, Morales was ordered to submit to a pat-down search. While the guard was conducting the search, a small bag fell out of Morales’ pants. Inside the bag were several folded pieces of paper that contained marijuana.

In sentencing the defendant, Judge Crabb noted that when you commit a crime in prison, there are consequences.

The charges against Morales were the result of an investigation conducted by FCI Oxford Investigative Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
