Man Sentenced for Verona Bank Robbery

MADISON, WIStephen P. Sinnott, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Reginald J. Ballard, 38, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to 11 years in federal prison for armed bank robbery. Ballard pleaded guilty to this charge on August 19, 2009.

On the morning of May 4, 2009, Ballard entered Capitol Bank in Verona, Wis., brandished a firearm, and demanded money. Upon fleeing the bank, Ballard was immediately confronted by a Verona police officer just outside of the bank. Ballard then pulled out his firearm from his waistband and put it to his head. After a brief standoff with police, Ballard dropped the gun and surrendered.

At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb stated that Ballard was a danger to the community and put many lives at risk during this bank robbery.

Acting United States Attorney Stephen P. Sinnott praised the efforts of all law enforcement agents and bank employees involved in this dangerous incident. The charges against Ballard were the result of an investigation conducted by the Verona Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Dane County Sheriff’s Department. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Reinhard.
