Attempted Identity Theft Scheme

The Milwaukee office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) publicized information today regarding a potential scam aimed at defrauding unsuspecting consumers. Someone claiming to represent the “American Sweepstakes Company” has been contacting consumers and telling them they have won up to $3,000. The person being called is told they have only one hour to decide if they want to keep the money, “gift” it to someone else, or risk losing the money. In all cases the caller attempts to obtain personal information such as driver’s license and passport information.

The public is cautioned about submitting personal information to strangers over the phone, on the Internet, or by mail. Those who have already given out personal information and have incurred a loss due to this sweepstakes scam are encouraged to contact the Milwaukee FBI office at 414-276- 4684.
